Carnival Cruise Line is the first honoree of the Port of Seattle’s first Program Innovator Award.  They also received the port’s Green Gateway Partners Award, which honors their commitment to protecting the environment.

The cruise line was recognized for their innovations in fuel efficiency, waste reduction, and their partnership with the Nature Conservancy. Carnival’s training program for onboard crew was also acknowledged.

The annual Green Gateway Awards are given to the cruise and container customers whose environmentally-focused initiatives and programs go above and beyond regulatory requirements, and support the port’s goal of becoming the cleanest and most energy-efficient port in North America.  Carnival’s director of environmental operations, Rabih Aboudargham, accepted the honors Thursday at the Port of Seattle’s Cruise Annual All Agency Pre-Season Reception.  “Receiving this recognition from Port of Seattle – one of the leaders in seaport environmental innovation – is truly an honor,” he said.  “It also is an inspiration to continue seeking new ways to reduce our carbon footprint and preserve and protect our precious natural resources.”

Carnival’s eco-friendly approach includes use of shore power in different ports, a donation program for used but serviceable things from their ships, getting guests involved in shipboard recycling activities, training programs for crew, fleetwide efforts to increase fuel efficiency, and an extensive management plan for all waste generated aboard Carnival ships.
